Capsule endoscopy; Colonoscopy; Device-assisted enteroscopy; Colorectal cancer; Gastrointestinal endoscopy

Special Issue Information

Capsule endoscopy is moving from passive image acquisition toward intelligent, connected and increasingly multifunctional diagnostic platforms. This Special Issue will examine advances at the interface of artificial intelligence, capsule endoscopy, engineering and minimally invasive gastrointestinal diagnostics. It will welcome original research, reviews, technical reports and perspectives on AI-assisted detection, classification and reporting; small-bowel, colon and pan-enteric capsule endoscopy; active, robotic and magnetically controlled capsules; non-white-light, spectral and multimodal sensing; localisation and navigation; quality and performance standards; clinical validation and external generalisability; remote and digitally enabled diagnostic pathways; patient-centred implementation; sustainability; and health-economic evaluation.

The Special Issue will also highlight the clinical applications of capsule endoscopy in surgical decision-making, referral pathways and postoperative surveillance, complementing contributions on AI-assisted interpretation and next-generation or robotic capsule technologies. Particular emphasis will be placed on technologies that move beyond proof-of-concept toward reproducible, clinically validated and scalable use, including transparent reporting, benchmarking, workflow integration, safety and real-world impact.
